Gaviscon Infant Sachets

Gaviscon Infant Sachets contain the active ingredients sodium alginate and magnesium alginate which belong to a group of medicines called 'reflux suppressants'. These prevent reflux by stabilising the stomach contents to reduce the occurance of reflux and bringing up of feeds (posseting).

Reflux is the process by which the stomach contents flow back up the tube that leads from the mouth to the stomach, which can cause an infant to be sick, spit up more than normal and become distressed.

Gaviscon Infant Sachets are sugar free and are suitable for infants aged 1 to 2 years.
For infants aged 1 to 2 years only:
  • Infants under 4.5kg (10lb): Use one sachet.
  • Infants over 4.5kg (10lb): Use two sachets.
Administration:
  • Bottle fed infants up to 2 years of age: Mix each sachet into 115ml of feed in the bottle, shake well, feed the infant as normal.
  • Breast fed infants and other infants up to 2 years: Mix each sachet with 5ml of cooled, boiled water until a smooth paste is formed, then add another 10ml of cooled, boiled water and mix. For breast fed infants give Gaviscon Infant part way through each feed or meal using a spoon or feeding bottle. For all other infants give Gaviscon Infant at the end of each meal using a spoon or feeding bottle.
Do not give more than six times in 24 hours.
  • Active Ingredients: Sodium Alginate 225mg and Magnesium Alginate 87.5mg.
  • Other Ingredients: Mannitol (E421) and Colloidal Silica.
  • Do not use Gaviscon Infant Sachets with other feed thickening agents or infant milk preparations containing a thickening agent.
  • If your baby is under one year old, you should ask your doctor or pharmacist before giving Gaviscon Infant Sachets.
  • Gaviscon Infant Sachets contain 0.9mmol (21mg) sodium per sachet. To be taken into account by patients on a low sodium diet.
Do not use Gaviscon Infant Sachets if:
  • Your child was born prematurely.
  • Your child is allergic to sodium alginate, magnesium alginate or any of the other ingredients.
  • Your child is being sick or has a fever or diarrhoea.
  • You have been told or it is suspected that your child has damage to their kidneys or they have been put on a low salt diet.
