Mouth & Throat Infections
One of the most common infections of the mouth is oral thrush, a yeast infection caused by a type of fungus called Candida albicans, which lives on the skin and inside the mouth of most people. It doesn't usually cause symptoms, but it can cause an infection in people with a weakened immune system. As such, it affects approximately 1 in 20 babies, as their immune systems are still developing
Symptoms of oral thrush in adults include an unpleasant taste, soreness, a burning sensation on the tongue and difficulty swallowing. In babies, the main symptom of oral thrush is one or more white spots or patches in your baby's mouth, which may look like curd or cottage cheese. Other symptoms include refusing the breast or fussiness at the breast when you try to feed and a whitish sheen to their saliva.
Oral thrush and is usually harmless, but can be treated in adults and children over 4 months with an over the counter remedy such as miconazole. Very young babies should see a doctor for treatment, if it does not clear up on its own in a few days.
