period delay tablets

In the UK, there is only one medication routinely used to delay periods, and that is norethisterone. The tablets are most commonly referred to as Utovlan, which is their brand name. Norethisterone is a progesterone hormone that changes the menstrual cycle and prevents womb lining breakdown (a period). Keep reading to learn more about period delay tablets.

How long can I safely delay my period?

You will be able to delay your period by approximately 17 days with these period delay tablets, which come in two boxes. The product is intended for use only occasionally and is not intended to be taken more than three or four times per year (unless your pharmacist prescribes it). Norethisterone cannot delay your period if you are currently taking a contraceptive pill. Please speak to your pharmacist, doctor, or nurse first if you'd like to delay your period.

Who is not eligible to use period delay tablets?

Due to the weak estrogen (oestrogen) activity of Period Delay tablets, it is unsuitable for use in patients who are not recommended to use estrogens. The following category of people should not use period delay tablets:

- Women who experience allergic reactions to one or more of the tablets' active or inactive ingredients
- Pregnant women
- If you have a history of jaundice and miscarriage
- Those with a history of blood clots in the lungs (Pulmonary Embolism) or leg (Venous Thromboembolism)
- Those with ongoing cardiovascular issues such as a recent heart attack (Myocardial infarction) or Angina
- Patients with liver problems and Porphyria
- Those with undiagnosed irregular vaginal bleeding
- Migraine sufferers

Unless you are prescribed norethisterone to treat breast cancer, you shouldn't take the medication if you are breastfeeding. You should also avoid taking the medication if you have any genital or breast cancer history.

Please discontinue immediately if you encounter the following while using Norethisterone:

- Increase in blood pressure
- Significant mood changes
- New onset of migraine headaches
- Jaundice

How is norethisterone taken?

You will have to take the medicine 3 days before the start of your period and 1 tablet 3 times per day for up to 20 days. Your period will be delayed for this period of time, and you will start bleeding 2 to 4 days after you stop using the pill.

What are the side effects of Norethisterone?

For most women, it is safe to use norethisterone on an occasional basis, but it should not be used regularly to delay periods.

Just like any other medicine, there are side effects linked with taking this medication. These include:

- Low mood
- Loss of libido
- Acne
- Fluid retention
- Breast tenderness

However, it is critical to note that its effectiveness varies from woman to woman. Also it's not a contraceptive, so you will need to use another method to prevent pregnancy while taking it, such as condoms or the contraceptive pill.

When should you delay your period with period delay tablets?

In spite of the fact that norethisterone is a safe and effective way to postpone your period, it can have some side effects - so you should try it out before your holiday to find out how it will react to you. Prior to delaying your period, you should get in touch with your pharmacist to get advice on the best option.
