Migraines can come out of nowhere; they vary in severity from person to person. From light sensitivity and seeing auras to having to lay in total darkness for extended periods of time. In conjunction with Migraine Awareness Week (5-11th September), we will be providing our top tips for fast migraine relief across the UK.

What is Migraine Awareness Week?

The focus of Migraine Awareness Week 2021 is a campaign for better migraine healthcare across the board. Their report details key issues within the migraine healthcare system, including statistics such as: 23% of people were experiencing migraines for over two years before being diagnosed.

How can I get involved?

There are many ways that you can get involved this week; you can find more information, as well as further support and resources on the Migraine Trust website.

What is a migraine?

Ordinarily, a migraine is a moderate to severe headache, which is experienced as a throbbing pain on one side of your head.

Symptoms can also include:

- Feeling or being sick
- An increased sensitivity to sound or light

In some cases, people only experience migraines occasionally, however other people may have them several times a week.

There are three main types of migraine:

- A migraine without a headache, where other symptoms are still experienced
- One with an aura, where warning signs such as seeing flashing lights present themselves
- A migraine without an aura, where there are not any specific warning signs

How are migraines caused?

A migraine can be caused by a multitude of lifestyle factors. These include:

- Starting your period
- Stress
- Tiredness
- Specific drinks or foods

How can I prevent migraines?

If you are looking to prevent migraines, you should ensure that you are getting regular sleep, meals and exercise. You should also stay hydrated and limit your intake of caffeine and alcohol.

Migraine treatment

If migraines are getting in the way of your daily life, and you are in need of a long term solution, we would recommend visiting your GP. Depending on the type of migraine you are experiencing, and its severity, they may recommend one of a range of medications. You can find more information on the NHS website. It is important to speak to your pharmacist or GP, as overusing painkillers can lead to a painkiller headache, worsening your symptoms.
